Inflammations.—Peritoneal inflammations are closely connectedwith alterations of the alimentary canal. From an etiologicalStandpoint, inflammations of the nrino-genital apparatns, especialljof the uteras in female animals, and injuries of the abdominal wallsare to be considered in tliis connection. All cases of Peritonitiswhich I have seen in slaughtered animals were caused by injuriesof the alimentary tract, of the urino-genital apparatus, or of theabdominal wall, or by primary inflammations of these parts. Peritonitis of domestic animals is either purely fibrinous orsero-fibrinous, more rarely purulent. In extensive injuries of organscovered by the peritoneum, the exudation may decompose—ichorousinflammation of the peritoneum. Perforative Peritonitis followinginjuries of the stomach and intestines is always of an ichorouscharacter. This is the case also in so-called traumatic Peritonitis ofcattle, in which foreigu bodies pass from the second or third stomachsinto the body cavity. Inflammations of the peritoneum following rupture of the blad-der or in connection with necrotic cystitis are characterized by theintense urinous odor of the exudation. The odor clings to the DIGESTIVE APPARATUS 287 Peritoneum oveu »fter washing out tbe abnormal coutents withwater; otherwise iiiÜamniatory plieuomeua in uriuous Peritonitis,HS a rnle, are only slightlj pronounced.
