The Knight and Lansquenet, c. 1512. By 1509 colour prints were successfully produced by printing the line block in black but using a second block to print the background colour. Unprinted areas of white paper formed the highlights. Wechtlin’s The Knight and Lansquenet is a beautiful example of this technique.
