Make a small mound of the soil, over which the roots should be evenly spread, so that the crowns, when covered, shall be three inches below the surface of the ground. If planted in the fall, the whole bed should be covered before winter sets in with two or three inches of stable manure, which may be lightly forked in between the rows as soon as the ground is softened in the spring. It grows rapidly, and with lit- tle care, or rather by easy management, it soon forms a magnificent hedge, very dense, and perfectly impervious to the sight. Of course it is not adapted to turn stock, but it forms a most desirable and ornamental screen to divide the lawn from other parts of the ground, or for any other purpose.
