AIDS research on rabbit. View of a white trans- genic rabbit, with a researcher about to take a blood sample from its ear. This rabbit has been genetically manipulated. It is used in antiviral research on HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), the virus which causes AIDS. The rabbit blood will be tested for the presence of antiviral molecules to establish whether the rabbit is infected. AIDS research includes the use of antiviral drugs and gene therapy, in an attempt to prevent the HIV virus from reproducing. HIV attacks the human immune system, leaving the AIDS victim prone to other infections. Photographed at the Institute of Virology U74 INSERM (Strasbourg) in France.
