Cup and Ring Stone, Dod Law, near Doddington, Northumberland
This cup and ring stone is one of the better preserved of the many examples in Northumberland and is one of several discovered cut into outcrop rocks of sandstone on Dod Law. This outcrop is close to an Iron Age hill fort which dominates the escarpment above the Milfield Plain. The markings on the rock probably predate the hill fort by many centuries as it is thought that they were made in the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age and are between 3000 and 5000 years old. The hill fort probably dates to about 300 BC. Nobody really knows what significance these markings had for the people who made them.
