Blue sky frontal view of the wooden Cathedral of Our lady of the Rosary, Plaza de Armas, Ancud, Chiloe Island, Chile
Pope Gregory XV1 created the Diocese of San Carlos of Ancud on July 1st 1840. The original Cathedral, with a 70 metre tall clock tower, was badly damaged in 1960 by the earthquake centred on Chiloe Island. Repair was considered too expensive, resulting in this wooden replacement.
