The adhesions are due either to the formation of a tensefibrous (ankylosis membranacea s. spuria) or osseous tissue (ankylosis osseas. vera). The ankylosis affects either all the ossicles,, or each of them maybe separately united with the walls of the tympanic cavity. Accordingly, wefind an ankylosis either between the head of the malleus alone or togetherwith the body of the incus and the tegmen tympani, or an adhesion betweeneither of these two ossicles and the external wall of the tympanic author has quite often found the long process of the incus adherent tothe posterior wall of the cavum tympani. While it is well known that ankylosis of the malleus and incus decreasethe power of vibration of the ossicles, still it does not necessarily follow that. (From a preparation in the authors collection.) the power of hearing will be materially affected. Ankylosis of the crura ofthe stapes with the fenestra ovalis must be considered the most unfavour-able termination of a chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane ofthe middle ear. Ankylosis of the crura of the stapes is the result of a diffuse inflammationof the mucous membrane of the cavum tympani. It affects either thestapes alone, or it is combined with ankylosis of the malleus and incus, withadhesions between the membrana tympani, ossicles, and inner wall of thetympanic cavity, with the format
