The location of schoolbuildings and school centers, however, has been urged as afactor in the plan, and arguments are frequently presentedfor the selection of monumental sites for the great buildingsthat are now erected for schools. Monumental sites on local streets where available areto be desired for such buildings, but sites on the mainthoroughfare are not, because the school should be awayfrom noises and dangers and should be on land of relativelylow value where a large open space can reasonably be setaside for recreation. Still further use of school buildings and yards during agreater portion of the twenty-four hours for the benefit ofthe community is to be desired and will doubtless develop,and a closer relationship also between school yards andthe public playgrounds is to be desired.
