This painting, titled Portrait of the Artist's Wife, is a good example of Van Dyck's power of depicting female character.
Anthony Van Dyck (1599-1641) was a Flemish Baroque artist. He became the leading court painter in England and is renowned for his portraits of Charles I of England and his family. Among his other works are Duke of Richmond and The Artist (a self-portrait). This painting, titled Portrait of the Artist's Wife, is a good example of Van Dyck's power of depicting female character. Whenever he is faced with a sitter in whom he is interested he suited his technique to the points he wished to emphasize. It is the possession of this versatility that enables him to infuse so much seductive charm into his women portraits and such trenchant vigor into those of men.
