The Maidanis three-quarters of a mile wide at its beginning andit broadens out to one and one-quarter miles in widthat its lower end. Government House, the residenceof the Viceroy, is opposite the northern end of theMaidan, while at the southern end is Belvedere, theheadquarters of the Lieutenant-Governor of historic Fort William on one side and mostof the large hotels,
