A surprise awaited the troops on their very appearance on the scene. The Indians were occupying a strong position and had prepared themselves fora fray. Their attitude indicated plainly that they would not yield to a demon-stration, and that, if the soldiers wanted to recapture the plunder, they would haveto fight for it. They then realized that they would have to fight anyway, since aretreat was impossible.
