View of the harbour at Angelmo, Puerto Montt, Chile, before (top) and after (bottom) the earthquake of the 22nd May 1960. The ground subsided one metre in this area. This was the largest ever recorded earthquake, with a magnitude of It struck 160 kilometres off the Chilean coast parallel to the city of Vladivia in southern Chile. 15 minutes after the earthquake a tsunami with waves measuring up to 25 metres hit the Chilean coast. Over 2 million people were left homeless and there were around 1,600 fatalities in Chile. Tsunami waves also hit Hawaii and Japan, causing a further 261 people.
