If a battery is planned for in the original design of a railwayits cost will approximalely equal the amount nf generating, Irans-mission and distribuling which it supplants. The advantages to be gained by the use <if a battery other thanthe possibility of doing a lighting business from a railway sub-sta-tion, as spoken of earlier, are quite numerous. The same holds true for the trans-mission and sub-station apparatus. Still another fact, which wouldin many instances alone warrant the use of a battery, is the assuredreliability of operation; for example, in case of a breakdown inthe power-house machinery or transmission line, current will stillbe available from the battery for some time. The attendance re-quired is but little. These and many other good qualities shouldbe sufficient argument for insuring a careful study of the batteryquestion before completing the design of any road. .\11 the details of a sub-station should be made as simple andfool-proof as possible, thus insuring better operation with the sameclass of help as though the sub-station were equipped with manyfancy devices.
