Thirty-two years ago nineteen physicians interested in thestudy of the eye came together at the New York Eye and EarInfirmary and, by the adoption of a plan of permanent organiz-ation and the presentation and discussion of scientific papers,founded the American Ophthalmological Society. Of the nine-teen founders six are still numbered among our members ; tenhave been removed by death. In the minutes of the first meeting of the society the nameof Dr. Henry W. Williams appears as Chairman of the Com-mittee on Nominations, on whose recommendation Dr. EdwardDelafield of New York was elected to the office of the fourth annual meeting, held in 1867, at Niagara Falls,the office of Vice-President was created, and Dr. Williams waselected to fill it.
