Cupping marks from cupping therapy. Circular macular areas of haemorrhage on a patient's back due to heat suction of the skin during cupping therapy. This treatment uses burning cotton or paper in special cups laid on the skin surface to create suction. An ancient form of alternative medicine still in use, it is thought to be effective for certain conditions such as muscular pain. These dark circles appear at the sites where the cups were placed. The dark colour is due to blood that pools following rupture of capillaries in the skin. Such discolouration is sometimes referred to as bruising, though it is not painful and can also be considered a form of ecchymosis.
