A 1921 newspaper image showing Birdcage Walk, St James Park, London with Wellington Barracks street is named after the Royal Menagerie and Aviary which was located there in the reign of King James I and was expanded by King Charles II. Edward Storey was keeper of the King's Birds at the time of Samuel Pepys. Until 1828 only the British Royal Family and the Grand Falconer, (Duke of St Albans), were allowed to drive along the road. The area in the mid 1800's had a reputation as a meeting place for homosexual men.
