Saone-et-Loire (71) Aerial view of the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny. Sold as national property in 1798, the abbey was dismantled and its church almost destroyed. Only 10% of the abbey remains today. Founded by William the Pious in 910, it was, for centuries, directly placed under the protection of the Pope in Rome, and independent of power, it was the seat of the largest medieval monastic order in the West. Its abbot had the role of mediator between the political powers and the pope.
