The Milanese church, to which the beautiful chapel of Martyr was added in the 15th century, was foundedby Eustorgio, Bishop of Milan from 315 to 331, and wasamongst those basilicas called extvamuvane, because theystood outside the walls of the city erected by the EmperorMaximian. In the beginning of the 13th century, in consequence ofthe rapid extension of the religious order founded by in 1206, twelve preaching friars came to serve inthe Basilica of Sant Eustorgio. This had, since its foundationin the 4th century, been subjected to more than one changeof form, and in 1227 when Archbishop Enrico Settalaceded the basilica and its dependencies to the Dominicansthe latter at once began to build their monastery besideit.
