Mass spectroscopy system. Mass spectrometer (left) and autosampler (right) used in chemical analysis. The autosampler is used to load samples into the spectrometer. This spectrometer is used for inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The sample is ionised in a plasma and the elements present are identified by their mass. Mass spectroscopy is the use of strong magnetic and electric fields to ionise samples and separate them by mass and charge. This spectrometer is an XSeries 2 ICP-MS from Thermo Scientific.
