Agriculture. ^JI^ ^ FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT "Understanding Profit - the Business of Farming", Alberta Agriculture's latest home study course, teaches some key financial management concepts. The course is intended for people who want to understand the concept of profit - what it is and how it is measured. This knowledge will help farmers understand how daTly business transactions affect profit, why it is important to monitor business profit, and how to interpret business financial statements. As with all of Alberta Agriculture's home study courses, this course is designed so registrants can work through it at their own pace, in their own home. The course is not just a reference book. It is intended to be used as a workbook. By doing the exercises which appear throughout the course, the student learns the concepts which are taught. The course comes packaged in a three-ring binder. It contains five chapters plus a summary. Chapter 1 describes profit in its basic form of revenue less expenses. Chapter 2 shows how product and supply inventory affect profit. Fixed assets and depreciation are discussed in Chapter 3; liabilities and interest in Chapter 4; and payables and receivables in Chapter 5. Each of the chapter topics is discussed in the context of how it affects profit. The financial management home study course is made available through the Home Study Program of Alberta Agriculture.
