Oesophagus epithelium. Light micrograph of a section through the stratified squamous epithelial cells which line the human oesophagus. The lumen (central cavity) of the oesophagus is at upper left. The nuclei of the cells appear as darker dots amongst the pale pink cytoplasm. The epithelial layer protects the underlying tissue and facilitates the passage of food and drink from the mouth by the lubricant action of its glandular secretions. Magnification: x65 at 35mm size.
