Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness, Highlands, Scotland.
Urquhart Castle, sitting on a promontory in Loch Ness, was founded in the 13th century on the site of medieval fortifications. It played a major part in the 14th century Wars of Independence and became a royal castle until it was given to Clan Grant. In 1692, Clan Grant decided to abandon the castle and blew up the gatehouse, leaving the castle to burn to prevent it falling into Jacobite hands. It is one of the most visited castles in Scotland, with wonderful panoramic views over Loch Ness and the hills of the Great Glen.
