In the feasts at rustic ]daces, thehollow statue of Saturn was filled with oil; heheld a pruning knife in his hand, and his feetwere surrounded with a band of wool. Satyrs. Greek deities of the wooded plains,as the Roman fauns were of the fieliis. Theyare usually represented as the attendants ofBacchus, or the lovers of the Nymphs, withgoats legs and horns, and human bodies coveredwith short hair ; often with Lacinia on the neck. A wildman, naked, or clothed in skins or leaves, andcarrying a club. The illustration is the deviceof De Chaumont, Marshal of France (+ 1510),with the motto, Alitcm aiiiiiiiDU agrcsii subtegiiiine scaliro, which he bore embroidered onthe pennon of his company. Savonnerie. (See Turkey-stitch.) Saxon Blue. Sulphate of indigo used as adye-stuff. Saxon Gold-work of elegant design and skilfulworkmansiiip,may be attributed to the 5 th and 6thcenturies.
