A few paces to the N. we reacli the Gate of Zion (Arab. Baben-Nebi Ddiid, gate of the prophet David; PI. E, 7, 8), situated ina tower of the town-wall. According to the inscription it was builtin 947 (1540-41]. A stone built into the E. side-wall of the gatewaybears a Latin inscription of the time of Trajan and originally belongedto a monument in honour of Jupiter Serapis.
