Entitled: "Surrender of the Spanish Forces to General Shafter." Drawing shows the surrender of the Spanish forces under General Toral, on the right, to General William R. Shafter and the American forces, at center and on the left; General Toral moves to present his sword to General Shafter, who declines. The Siege of Santiago also known as the Siege of Santiago de Cuba was the last major operation of the Spanish-American War on the island of Cuba. The Spanish-American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States, the result of US intervention in the Cuban War of Independence.
