Flesh yellow, of solid texture, sweet and well flavored ; shape slightly oblong, terminating abruptly; color deep purple above and bright yellow under the ground. Has but little neck. American Purple Top Yellow, or Long Island. This strain is of American origin, bred to a smaller top and short neck. Bulbs are of great size, yellow fleshed and purple crown. Yellow Swede. Shape oblong ; dull reddish color above ground, but yellow underneath. Carter's Imperial Purple Top. Flesh yellow, solid, firm, sweet and rich. It is a hardy sort, yields heavily. Monarch or Tankard. This is a yellow fleshed sort, having very large tankard shaped roots, with relatively small necks and tops. This variety is sold also as Hurst's Monarch and Carter's Elephant. Sweet Russian, or White. Grows to a very large size; flesh white, solid, of firm texture, sweet and rich ; an excellent DILL. SAGE. SWEET MARJORAM. SUMMER SAVORY. THYME. Sweet Herbs. Basil. The leaves are used for flavoring soups, stews, and highly-seasoned dishes. Borage. The leaves are used for flavoring. Dill. The seeds have an aromatic odor and warm pungent taste. They are used for pickling with cucumbers. Lavender. An aromatic, medicinal herb. Harjoram. A perennial plant, but not hardy enough to endure the winter of the North.
