He is the great-grandsonof Thomas Rutherford, the progenitor of the familyhere. Being the only surviving son, tothe farm property of his father uponhis^death^, 1S33, and has made farming his main businessthrough life. In early manhood Mr. Rutherford waselected captain of the Dauphin Cavalry, and hencehis military title. He has been active in politics, andwas elected member of the Legislature on the Whigticket in 1848, and re-elected in 1S49. He has been treasurer of Penn-sylvania State Agricultural Society for a long time,elected in 1864, and re-elected annually ever Rutherford has been identified with the variousoffices in his township, and in old Paxtang Church isa ruling elder. He married, March 19,1833, KeziahParke, of Chester County, and have issue. COL. SAMUEL Shoch, the grandfather of Col. Samuel,was a native of Germany, and on his emigration toAmerica settled near Philadelphia. He had severalchildren, among whom was John, whose birth oc-curred at the paternal home near Philadelphia. Hein 1792 removed to Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., andthere remained until his death in 1842.
