DresseLj district foreman of the Northern division ofthe Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation Company, has. A. R. Ayers. been appointed assistant superintendent of the Oregon divisionin charge of mechanical matters, at Portland, Oregon, succeed-ing W. R. Ladd. W. J. Eddv has been appointed inspector of tools and machin-er\- of the Rock Island Lines, with office at Chicago. Mr. Eddywas born in England, and previous to September, 1903, he was amachinists apprentice and journeyman in the shops of the Choc-taw, Oklahoma & Gulf at Shawnee, Okla. He was graduatedfrom Purdue University with the degree of mechanical engineerin 1907, and in September of that year entered the service of theErie Railroad as tool room inspector. While be was in thatposition the small tools were standardized and a classificationand record of all shop equipment was made, as described in theShop Section of the Railway Age Gazette, November 4, 1910, page85.
