Leonid Kravchuk (Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk,1934-2022) the first President of an independent Ukraine in his office inside the Presidential Palace, Kyiv, two months before the official end of the Soviet Union in 1991. Kravchuk, former Ukrainian Communist party boss, along with Belarusian leader Stanislav Stanislav Shushkevich played a major role ending the Soviet Union. In 1992 Kravchuk signed the Lisbon Protocol which began the process of giving up Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal. Kravchuk served as President from 1991 to 1994. In 2020 he was part of a group attempting to negotiate settlement with Russian backed separatists that had been fighting the Ukraine since 2014 in the eastern Ukraine.
