11,235 ft; 3,456 m – Dressed in its fresh-white powdery-best, Mt Hood shows off the glow of an approaching winter sunset. Seen here from the south, it is a study in contradictions. Although it is home to two world-class downhill ski areas (Timberline Ski Area and Mount Hood Meadows Ski Area) and provides thousands of hours of winter and summer recreation for skiers, climbers, hikers and snowmobilers, it is definitely NOT always friendly. Almost every year someone “fails the Mountain’s test,” and their body needs to be retrieved. This beautiful, yet often violent mountain, is quick to claim the lives of ill prepared and/or unwary recreational enthusiasts. In December of 2006, in two separate incidents, a total of five people died climbing the mountain.
