False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fungus Trichophyton tonsurans, causative agent of the skin condition tinea or ringworm. Here, fungal threads of the mycelium are seen, each thread called a hypha, some with a rounded spore at the tip. This species of Trichophyton is one of many which cause ringworm in animals and humans. Ringworm (tinea) is a fungal skin infection which occurs on the scalp, body, male genitals (jock itch), feet (athlete's foot) and occasionally the nails. It produces typically round, scaly lesions or patches of hair loss, mainly in children. Use of antifungal drugs is effective as a treatment. Magnification: x275 at size. Note: Magnification as for 6x7cm dupe, but mounted because of line at bottom of image.
