Again, when the speed hadrisen to 36 miles an hour, there was an. TRIPLE \AL\E ATTAtIlEU TO those on the train were placed in grad-uated release and were in that positionboth on the run from Bluefield to GlenLyn and from Christiansburg at the sum-mit of the Alleghenies to Roanoke. Thebrakes on the three cabooses, at the rearof the train, were all cut out, so that therewas an unbraked element at each end ofthe train. Finally the vent valve on thetender was plugged so that the emergencyapplications made on the run were ob-tained without any assistance from thisvalve. The yard at Bluefield lies on a grade ofabout 1 per cent so that, when the trainstarted, it quickly picked up speed untilit was running at a little more than 24miles an hour. Then came the first application of thebrakes, in order to stop the train to takeon the caboose of the train crew. Thereproduced copies of the trainagraph rec-ords show how the brakes responded.
