Cotard syndrome. Conceptual artwork of a woman in a coffin on a psychiatrist's couch, representing a patient with the rare Cotard syndrome. Patients with this syndrome suffer a range of symptoms, including the belief that they are dead. It is thought to be due to a malfunction of the emotional aspects of face-recognition circuits in the brain. Patients attribute their failure to recognise those around them to being dead.
