The National Art School in Sydney is housed within the old Darlinghurst Gaol. The interior of the perimeter walls show markings by convict stonemasons

British convicts who were trained locally in Sydney were required to cut a set number of stones each day. Most were illiterate so they marked the stones in different ways. The markings are most evident from the interior walls as the exteriors were more on show to the public.
