That he himiielf has captured it, and is asBured of itn boinf; wholly distinct from thu cuitiinon Pickerel, with which he asierta himaelf to be, and of course ia, conversant. He also adds, that it has only been known in those waters within a limited number of years ; and that it is tho popular belief that it wutt introduced the Connecti- cut by the breaking out of a new outlet from some mountain lake. If this be so, it is a strange fact, as this fish was only distinguished as belonging to the great lakes, last year, 1848, by IVoft'ssor Agassiz, who considers it peculiar to them ; and tho Mascalonge has been hitherto distinctly limited to the St. Lawrence busiii. This fish was considered by Kichurdson, as identical with tho Biiglish Pike, Esox Lu' ciua, which it is not, though nearly allied to h, whence its name, Lucioides. ^il 1. sil va sal to[ nij.
