Concrete Sound Mirrors, Greatstone near Dungeness, Kent, UK
Between 1928 and 1930 three concrete sound mirrors were constructed behind the beach at Greatsone. These were experimental and were to be part of a national early warning system to detect the sound of approaching potential enemy aircraft. The first mirror constructed was circular with a 20ft diameter, this was followed by a 30ft diameter mirror and finally a 200ft wall mirror was built. The mirrors worked but became obsolete in 1935 with the invention of radar.
