Italian-English information board at the Roman Crypt, Cumae Archaeological Park, Italy. Entitled 'Crypta Romana', with maps of the area and lettered plan of the crypt, it reads: 'The monument was dug into the the base of the hill on which lies the Acropolis. It was dug using techniques commonly used for digging blocks in tufa quarries. The gallery was built during the 1st century BC, contemporary to the construction of the Portus Julius at Lake Avernus and Lucrinus. It can be seen as part of the works ordered by the Emperor Augustus and his admiral Agrippa to increase military strength in the Flegrean area. Its purpose was to ensure speed of movement between Cumae and the Portus Julius. At many points the gallery rock was dressed with masonry to strengthen it.
