. Bulletin. Ethnology. densmore] CHIPPEWA CUSTOMS 91 the ceremony. {E) is the sacred stone, and {F) is the sacred pole. It is believed there are " evil spirits" outside the lodge who try to influence the candidate. They are repre- sented by men {G). Before the candidate enters the lodge he is addressed by one of these men who urges him not to enter. During the cere- mony these men try to dis- tract his attention and divert his mind. The doorkeeper does not allow them to enter the lodge. It is believed that the life of the candidate will be shortened if he is di- verted by these men or shows any discouragement because of their taunts. Within the lodge are four men (.4) who constantly advise him as to his conduct in the lodge, telling him to look at the sa- cred pole and to pay no at- tention to those who try to distract him. They also in- struct him to lead a quiet, moral life and to speak gently. These men " tlu'ow the shell " into the candidate during his initiation. A candidate for the second degree must provide two dogs, which are killed and placed at the entrance. {II) represents two water spirits and (7) two beavers which step aside and allow the can- didate to pass through the door which they guard against others. F and E represent the sacred stone and the sacred pole as in the first degi-ee, and there are two old men instead of one at.
