Sub-Agent Thorntons reward hadaccomplished the surrender b} the tribes to Captain Hill at Steilacoom of six SnoqualmieIndians. He held them as prisoners for trial. As before stated, there was no judge to hold courts in Lewis county, within whichwas Nisqually, where the murder of Wallace had been committed, and the district inwhich the murderers must be tried. To obviate this difficulty, the legislature, then insession, at the request of Governor Lane, passed a special act providing for a term of courtat Fort Steilacoom, in Lewis county. That county was attached to the first district forsuch purpose; and Chief Jiistice Bryant was empowered to hold a term of court at FortSteilacoom on the first Monday of October.
