Edinburgh, UK. Wed 7 October 2020. Scottish wildcat (Felis silvestris silvestris) at Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland. The species is listed as critically endangered in the United Kingdom and is primarily threatened by hybridisation with domestic cats. This population is estimated to comprise between 1000 and 4000 individuals, of which about 400 cats are thought to meet the morphological and genetic criteria of a wildcat. The Scottish wildcat was given protected status under the United Kingdom's Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Since 2007, it has been listed in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan as a priority species.
