When the Dahlquists decided to establish their ownpottery they took the name of Shawsheen from a beautifulbrook meandering through the meadows near their home,which Winthrop Pierce had made well-known through hiscanvases. The name Shawsheen is an Indian word meaningmeandering and was taken as a symbolic name becauseformalism is so nearly impossible in the handbuilding ofpottery, and because this primitive method is made mostfamiliar to us by the India
