Croesus on the stake. 1883 engraving of Croesus, King of lydia, (centre) being burnt at the stake. Lydia was an Iron Age kingdom of western Asia Minor, around Anatolia. Croesus was its king from 560 to 547 BC until his defeat by the Persians under Cyrus The Great (Cyrus II, centre left). In the Lydian account, Croesus was placed upon a great pyre by Cyrus' orders, as Cyrus wanted to see if any of the heavenly powers would appear to save him from being burned alive.
