Ileostomy. View of the abdomen of a 28-year old woman wearing an ostomy pouch following an ileostomy. This is a surgical procedure where a loop of the small intestine (ileum) is brought to the surface of the skin, allowing a bag or pouch to be fitted to collect fecal matter. This bypasses the colon and rectum, either following their removal or to allow a surgical site in the large intestine time to heal. In this case, the woman has had surgery to correct a rectovaginal fistula that resulted from the earlier removal of an infected abcess from the vagina.
