Frederic and Irene Joliot-Curie, French nuclear physicists. Irene (1897- 1956) was the daughter of the famous nuclear physicist Marie Curie. She married Frederic Joliot (1900-1958), her mother's assistant, in 1926. Together they worked on artificial radioactivity, making the first artificial radio-element. They shared the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1935. Irene died of leukaemia, probably caused by a lifetime of exposure to cancer-causing radiation.
