Used to illustrate their passage page 457 \"nor can it be rationally affirmed, that the Orang-outan and Chimpanzee are more widely separated from certain African and Oceanic Negroes than are the latter from the Teutonic or Pelasgic types\". Nott and Gliddon supported Morton's ideas on polygenism - that the races are unrelated - an idea that was later refuted by Darwin in his single origin hypothesis. Darwin believed all races to be related by descent. Nott and Gliddon wanted to use scientific techniques and historical documentation to sanction and popularise the prevalent prejudice of racial superiority. Illustrations like this make it clear that the claims that Darwin's theories were the origin of scientific racism are misguided."
