A specimen of the pterosaur (pterodactyl) Rhamphorynchus gemmingi (R. longimanus) found in the Solenhofen slate beds of Bavaria, West Germany. Pterosaurs were flying reptiles which appeared during the Jurassic period and became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, approximately 65 million years ago. They possessed large, fragile, membranous wings which were supported by an extremely elongated fourth digit.
