Botticelli's Mars and Venus


This painting belongs to the Florentine School and was done by the Florentine artist Sandro Botticelli (1444-1510). It hangs in the National Gallery in London. The theme is the Roman god of war, Mars (Ares to the Greeks), and the Roman goddess of love and beauty, Venus (Aphrodite to the Greeks). Painted in tempera on wood, it measures 2 feet 3 1/ 2 inches high by 5 five 8 inches in wide (698 x ). Venus clothed in white and gold is awake. Mars lies asleep. Four infant satyrs are playing about him, one trying to rouse him by blowing on a shell.
