View ENE of south gate of Silchester Roman town, Hampshire. The C3rdAD stone wall turns inwards forming a passage to the stone archway of the late C2nd earthen defences. To the rear, St Mary the Virgin's Church stands on the site of two Romano-Celtic temples just within the town walls. An Iron Age tribal centre which, by the end of the C1stAD, became the Romano-British town of Calleva Atrebatum with a regular grid of streets & public buildings, mainly of timber. Stone walls built c 260-80: a () circuit enclosing some 100 acres (40ha). The town had declined by the start of C5th. Geoffrey of Monmouth claims that King Arthur was crowned here.
