Crenated red blood cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the tissue between a blood vessel (lower right) and the lung (top), showing a crenated red blood cell (erythrocyte, centre). Crenation is caused by dehydration, which distorts the cell. Healthy red blood cells (round, lower right) can also be seen inside the blood vessel.
