Light microscopy of the trachea. The inner lining consists of a so-called respiratory epithelium although no gas exchange or respiration occurs in the trachea. Blue-stained cells in the pseudostratified columnar surface epithelium are goblet cells secreting mucus. The irregular nature of the epithelium surface is due to minute cilia. Occasional mucoid-type glands are deep and part of the tracheal rings of cartilage are noted. Magnification x80 when narrow width printed at 10 cm.
